Age: Incoming 6th-12th graders
Dates: August 7-11
Debate Coach Tim Averill and members of the Waring Debate Society will be offering one week of instruction in debate to incoming 6-12th graders and members of the greater Beverly community who are interested in developing their skills in debate. Waring Debate has just completed a very successful season, with beginning and experienced teams winning several tournaments. Waring is currently the 9th largest debate program in New England despite our very small student body.
Waring Debaters attend tournaments locally and regionally, as well as competing in the Barkley Forum for High Schools at Emory University in Atlanta.
Introduction to Debate – This week will be devoted to learning the basic skills of debate, including public speaking, researching topics, writing persuasive arguments, note-taking, and refuting the arguments of opponents. Students who enroll will find that the course will help them in all their academic work for school and will help them to gain self-confidence and develop a stronger voice. The week will conclude with a “tournament.”
Taught by: Tim Averill, Waring Debate Coach, and Waring School Debate students
